Paul-Hus to Receive Clarivate Analytics Doctoral Dissertation Proposal Scholarship
The Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) is delighted to announce that Adèle Paul-Hus is the 2019 recipient of the ASIS&T Clarivate Analytics Doctoral Dissertation Proposal Scholarship. The award’s purpose is to foster research in information science by encouraging and assisting doctoral students in the field with their dissertation research.
The Doctoral Dissertation Proposal Scholarship, established in 1981, is sponsored by Clarivate Analytics. Candidates are evaluated on the following criteria: Potential significance of research to the field of information science; Validity of methodology and proposed methods of analysis; originality and creativity; clarity and completeness of the proposal; presentation of a convincing plan for completion in a reasonable amount of time; and evidence of a continuing interest in scholarship, such as, a previous publication record.
Adèle Paul-Hus is an information sciences PhD candidate at the École de bibliothéconomie et des sciences de l’information, Université de Montréal. She holds a masters degree in information sciences and a masters degree in anthropology from Université de Montréal. Her doctoral research focuses on acknowledgement functions within the scholarly communication process and how scientific credit attribution practices vary depending on academic status and gender of contributors.
The proposed dissertation is titled: Beyond funding: What can acknowledgements reveal about credit attribution in science? / Au-delà du financement: Que peuvent révéler les remerciements au sujet de l’attribution du crédit scientifique? It seeks to understand the value and functions of acknowledgments in the scholarly communication process and credit attribution practices in science by empirically exploring the content and characteristics of acknowledgements. The project is based on quantitative analysis of over 1 million acknowledgements using natural language processing, bibliometrics and correspondence analysis, and qualitative validation using a subset of the material.
In supporting her application for the scholarship, her advisor, Professor Vincent Larivière wrote, “The doctoral project of Adèle is one of capital importance for both the scientometrics and the entire research community. It focuses on the role of acknowledgements in the scholarly communication process and how acknowledgements attribution—and its flipside, authorship—varies as a function of the status and gender of authors and acknowledged individuals. Results of her project could lead to recommendations for the use of acknowledgements as bibliometric indicators in the evaluation of research and thus have practical implications for research evaluation and science policy.”
Upon learning of her selection as the 2019 Clarivate Analytics Doctoral Dissertation Proposal Scholarship winner, Ms. Paul-Hus said, “I would like to thank the members of the award jury, Clarivate Analytics and ASIS&T for this scholarship. This prize, beyond the honour it represents, will allow me to complete my dissertation and to share my findings.”
Ms. Paul-Hus will receive her award at the 2019 meeting of the Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) which will be held in Melbourne, Australia, October 19-23, 2019.
